British Car Advertising of the 1960s

British Car Advertising of the 1960s
During the 1960s, the automobile finally secured its position as an indispensable component of daily life in Britain. Car ownership more than doubled from approximately one car for every 10 people in 1960 to one car for every 4.8 people by 1970. Advertisers, who once needed to promote the joys of motoring as well as the particular pleasures of the individual product, no longer needed to wonder whether the potential customer (let alone society at large) might be content with no car at all. It was during this time that the question changed from ?Do we need a car?? to ?What car shall we have?? This well-illustrated history explores the many types and trends of ads issued by both domestic car manufacturers and importers in three main sections: ?Family Marques: Engines of an Industry, ? ?Luxury and Sporting Marques: Aspiration and Escape? and ?Imported Marques: Britain Embraces the World.

Cruise O Matic: Automobile Advertising of the 1950s by Yasutoshi Ikuta,
The 1950s did for the cruiser what the 1990s have done for the SUV. Cars back then were faster, bigger, and more boldly styled than ever before. Sunday driving -- Cleaver-style -- in the regal family Ford, Edsel, or Plymouth topped the list of national pastimes; and teenagers, behind the wheels of their daddies' thundering T-birds, had fun, fun, fun across America's highways. The economic prosperity of the country made for an "ultramatic" boom in car manufacturing, and the advertising industry followed suit. This reissue ora Chronicle Books classic collects the "masterpieces" of automobile advertising, culled from the pages of such popular periodicals as Life, The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, Look, and Holiday. Their colorful illustrations and catchy copy give these ads a "power-packed beauty" all their own. So take a cruise down memory lane with this fond look back on a time when tail fins and chrome were the standard, and the American car was the true King of the Road.
